What is?

The cataract consists of a total or partial opacity of the natural lens of the (crystalline) eye. It occurs when the crystalline lens, which has refractive capacity and allows focusing of objects and the passage of light, gradually loses transparency.

What is its cause?

The appearance of the cataract stems from the process of natural aging of the human being. There are also other etiological factors, such as diabetes, trauma and some drugs. In some cases, the cataract is congenital, that is, it occurs from birth.

How can it be avoided?

Cataracts can not be prevented, but can be detected by eye examinations. It is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist, to detect the possible existence of a cataract, the type, size and location, and to determine if it has a surgical indication.
